I can relate to this. We are ill prepared culturally to the realities of children, and the wonder of babies, and how perfect they are as they are.

There also seems no way to prepare to what it feels like to have your heart live outside your body!

Plato thought that babies were born knowing everything and then forgot it in the trauma of birth. I had never found this plausible until I had a baby and saw his strange wise little face.
