Some housekeeping: we are hosting a RADICAL MEETING / webinar about how lactation professionals have been breaking their professional code of ethics to market baby formula. It will shock you. And our plan to stop it will THRILL YOU! 🔥 Sign up here.
Ok! A quick recap!
WHO ARE WE? We are a union of diverse, unapologetic women who are first and foremost, mothers. We range from the wily mountain dwellers homesteading so off grid a census worker couldn’t even find them to working professional mothers in the heart booming cities who squeeze advocacy work in between serving teen moms and attending meetings at the White House, and every sort of lactivist, placenta wielding lunatic in between. All of us care about these three things:
WHO IS BOBBIE? Bobbie is $142 million venture capital funded formula company. The co-founders, Laura Modi and Sarah Hardy (you can see us confront her here), are two former Air BnB executives. Bobbie is a boutique formula company that boasts organic ingredients and is marketed to health-conscious moms who are willing to spend a little more on formula for better ingredients. Their marketing is also underhanded, filthy, and predatory.
WHAT IS THE #BACKOFFBOBBIE CAMPAIGN? We started the #backoffbobbie campaign to protect the motherbaby dyad from predatory companies like Bobbie that profit from separating the dyad. We chose Bobbie because we believe they are the vanguard in predatory online marketing. They have figured out innovative ways to weasel into sacred birth/maternal spaces and formula companies are following Bobbie’s lead. We believe the only force that can stop predatory formula marketing from getting worse is mothers.
WHAT HAPPENED ON LAST WEEK’S EPISODE OF RAD MOMS V. BOBBIE? Here’s the long version. The short version: over fifty rad mom union members met with Bobbie’s CEO, Laura Modi, to share the ways predatory formula marketing has DIRECTLY and NEGATIVELY impacted them/their communities. Modi was polished and professional and heard our list of demands while visibly being VERY UNCOMFY.
NOW YOU’RE UP TO SPEED! That brings us to last week. Modi reached out for a follow up meeting on Zoom. I brought two fellow rad moms with me: Shanna Williams, an LSW out of Philly who focuses on treating postpartum moms and Kayla Dunavan, an IBCLC working in private practice and in a small rural hospital in Southern California that largely serves low wage workers.
