At my baby shower roughly two years ago, I surveyed the small group of intimate friends and felt proud that I had successfully built a support system of fiercely intelligent and emotionally sophisticated women whom I admired. I had no doubt that this baby would be loved by this ad-hoc village, and that my bonds would only grow deeper with this group of unconventional women once they saw me through this major life milestone. Despite the fact that all these women lived in LA and I now lived in Washington, our friendships would not fray.
In the end, it wasn’t geography that strained some of these friendships; it was becoming a mother.
